Oftentimes there is dysfunction in the marital relationship of either the parents or spouse of the anorexic or bulimic patient. This dysfunction may at times be expressed through the maladaptive behaviors and symptoms of the eating disordered patient. These need to be addressed with he marital couple.
Couples therapy is often helpful in addressing both the symptoms of anorexia and bulimia as well as the relationship problems that may contribute to their maintenance. Couples therapy should be added in whenever feasible, especially when treating adolescents who still live with their parents or older patients whose interactions with their parents continue to be conflicted or patients in troubled marriages.
